EAST ISLES — A bicyclist was killed when he was struck by a school bus near Lake Calhoun Thursday morning, Minneapolis police reported.
Police did not identify the man or the driver of the school bus. A spokeswoman for the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office said information on the bicyclist would be made available Thursday evening.
Inspector Kristine Arneson of the Fifth Precinct said police were called to the intersection of East Calhoun Parkway and West Lake Street at about 10 a.m. They were responding to a 911 call from a witness to the accident.
The school bus apparently was northbound on East Calhoun Parkway and turning west onto West Lake Street when it collided with the bicyclist. The bicyclist was southbound through the intersection, Arneson said.
Minneapolis Public Schools spokesman Ross Bennett said there were no children on the school bus at the time of the accident. The bus was operated by Laidlaw under contract with the school district.
The bus driver had just finished his route and was headed back to its company base at the time of the crash, Bennett said.
