The Minnesota Monitor is reporting that members of Westboro Baptist Church, of Kansas, notorious protesters at U.S. soldiers’ funerals, are claiming to be coming to Minneapolis to picket at funerals of those killed in the I-35W bridge collapse.
The Westboro group claims on its website that God struck down the bridge because Westboro Baptist Church members were "persecuted" during a 1998 protest in front of St. Mary’s Basilica.
A statement on the group’s site begins, "Thank God for Minneapolis bridge collapse."
Church members have blamed everything from the lack of success in the Iraq war to 9-11 to Hurricane Katrina, and much more, on America’s tolerance of gays.
"The bridge stood in place by the word of God and it fell by the word of God," Shirley Phelps Roper told the Minnesota Monitor. "Each of these little events is just a harbinger of the coming destruction of this American experiment. We are delivering the final call of the doomed nation."
Roper is the daughter of Fred Phelps, the church’s pastor.
