Maps reveal Southwest’s language preference

Nearly 25 percent of people living in the 55408 zip code speak a language other than English at home, according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) Web site.

The Web site uses information from the 2000 census and has created a language map of the country, using the 30 most common languages or language clusters, such as "Scandinavian languages."

The MLA Web site said 7,127 of 28,768 of 55408's residents spoke a language other than English at home. (The 55408 are extends between Penn and Portland avenues and between 26th and 36th streets.)

Non-English languages spoken at home range from Spanish or Spanish Creole (3,746) to Navajo (5). Others include: African languages (944); Hmong/Miao (421); Vietnamese (244) and German (181).

Only 6 percent of 55410's residents, who live in the city's far Southwest corner, speak a language other than English at home. The top three non-English languages are, in order, Spanish, French and Scandinavian languages.
