For the love of art Southwest curators help build MIA’s rich collections

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) houses more than 100,000 diverse art objects spanning 5,000 years of world history -- and three of its 16 curators and assistant curators, Matthew Welch, Sue Canterbury and Dennis Michael Jon, live in Southwest.

Curators have a wide range of duties. They research and write on items in the museum's permanent collection, work with art collectors and other museums to develop special exhibits, travel the country and the world to look at other museums' exhibits and meet with art dealers about potential purchases, and try to cultivate art donations locally.

Welch, Canterbury and Jon gave the Southwest Journal a tour of the collections, speaking about how they arrived at the job, some of its challenges, and their favorite pieces.
