2007 Education Guide

Parents and guardians often say they know when they've found the right school for their children, just by walking into the building and getting a &#8220feel” for the place. That doesn't make the search any less painstaking, though. Choosing a school for your child can be a tough assignment, especially when there are so many options in Minneapolis. To help you make your decision, the Journal arms you with its annual listings of early childhood, elementary, middle and high school options.

PUBLIC SCHOOL ABBREVIATION/EXPLANATION GLOSSARY

Alternative school = A school with its own facility run by community agencies that hire its staff. Their mission is to serve at-risk youth. Students attending alternative schools continue to be considered Minneapolis Public Schools students during their enrollment.

Areas A, B, C = Schools are broken into these geographic areas under the leadership of area superintendents.

Attendance areas = The geographic area around a community school for which the district can guarantee space for resident students entering kindergarten only.

Charter school = Independent public schools that are sponsored by a school district, university, the state or a nonprofit organization. Charter schools operate under a contract with the sponsor.

Choice Is Yours = A program that allows for students in Minneapolis to attend schools outside the district.

CLASS = Coordinated Learning for Academic and Social Success, an elementary and middle school program for special education students whose needs extend beyond regular special education instruction.

Community/neighborhood school = An elementary school with an attendance area that draws most of its students from the surrounding community. Community/neighborhood schools reflect the interests of the families in the school.

DCD = Developmental Cognitive Disability

ECFE = Early Childhood Family Education

ECSE = Early Childhood Special Education

ELL = English Language Learners

GEMS = Girls in Engineering, Math and Science

High Five = A program for kids who turn 4 years old by Sept. 1 and who will start kindergarten the following year.

IB/PYP = International Baccalaureate/Primary Years Programme, a prestigious program that trains students to be inquirers, thinkers and communicators.

K = Kindergarten

Magnet = A specialized area of study located at a school, meant to draw students from all over the city, not just an attendance area.

Middle school = Grades 6-8 are considered the middle grades.

Montessori = Based on the theories and practices developed by Maria Montessori, a self-directed, individualized approach.

Mpls KIDS = A before-school/afterschool, on-site education/daycare program.

OHD = Other Health Disability

Open school = A school that values academic choice in the learning environment. Much of the teaching is thematic with hands-on learning activities. Students also work in cooperative and small-group experiences.

Power of You = A program at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College, 1501 Hennepin Ave., that offers free tuition to incoming college freshman, based on need and availability, for two years.

Pre-K = Prekindergarten

PI = Physically Impaired

Rec Plus = Activity program coordinated with Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

SLC = Small Learning Community, a specialized study area that students are grouped in according to interest in high school.

SPEN = Special Programs for Elementary Needs

SPAN = Special Programs for Adolescent Needs (for students with emotional or behavioral disorders)

Spanish dual immersion school = Students master curriculum objectives while learning Spanish or English as a second language.

Minneapolis Public Elementary Schools

Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) are unique for their diversity. More than 38,590 students within the district's 103 schools, all told, speak at least 90 different languages. Because of the district's emphasis on &#8220school choice,” families may choose from several different neighborhood schools and magnet programs in MPS.

Neighborhood schools have become more specialized, reflecting the interests of their surrounding communities. For example, Kenny Community School is cultivating an environmental focus, while Whittier International Elementary School is pursuing the globally minded International Baccalaureate/Primary Years Programme and Burroughs Community School features advanced placement.

To learn more about each school program, call the schools to set up a tour. Note that many tours hadn't been scheduled by the time the Journal went to press.

School choice selections for pre-K-8 are due by Jan. 15, 2007 (high school applications are due Dec. 15, and the Minneapolis High School Choice Fair will be held Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1300 Nicollet Mall, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., on the second floor).

Schools are also hosting tours and open houses to show off facilities and answer questions. Many school tours include a walk-through of a classroom, common spaces such as the library, cafeteria and gym, and rooms that are unique to the school.

Armatage Community & Montessori Principal Joan Franks said that parents should be able to get a glimpse of the school's culture during the tour.

&#8220They should expect to see the way kids interact with each other and staff and the quality of learning,” she said.

She said commonly asked questions center on the level of academic rigor in the classroom, the school's goals for its students, scope and sequence of the curriculum, whether parent involvement is welcomed, the experience level of faculty and turnover rates, and how the school rates in achievement compared to other nearby schools.

Other questions are about class sizes (average class size is 26 in grades K-3; 32 in grades 4-8; and 34 in grades 9-12), as well as special programs and services, among many others.

For further information, call the school district's Student Placement Services, 668-1840 for English speakers and 668-3700 for non-English speakers. PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS

Students attending one of seven high schools in Minneapolis Public Schools select a Small Learning Community (SLC) that group children and teachers together according to interest area.

The 23 SLCs focus on such areas as art, technology, liberal arts, business, automotives, language, engineering and more. One of the benefits of SLCs are that students and teachers work together in a close-knit environment. SLCs are open to any high school student, although some restrictions apply (noted in the listings below).

High school applications are due Dec. 15 (pre-K-8 cards are due by Jan. 15, 2007). The Minneapolis High School Choice Fair will be held Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1300 Nicollet Mall, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., on the second floor.

For more information, call the school district's Student Placement Services, 668-1840 for English speakers and 668-3700 for non-English speakers or check out www.mpls.k12.mn.us or the school choice website at http://schoolchoice.mpls.k12.mn.us.
