A park employee found the body of 20-year-old Melissa Danielle Dols, of Edina, June 25 in the channel that connects Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said she drowned. Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.
“We know through preliminary investigations that she had been drinking before she went missing,” said Minneapolis Police Department Lt. Gregory W. Reinhardt, who responded to the scene along with park police, the Hennepin County Water Patrol and other officers.
Dols, whose body had been in the water for at least two days, was drinking with a group of people in the secluded area between the lakes late Thursday night or early Friday morning, Reinhardt said.
Police have found no indication of foul play, he said. No suspects have been found.
Transients often use the area as a camping spot, Reinhardt said.
The park employee who found Dols was operating a milfoil machine in the area just before 10 a.m., Reinhardt said.
“Where the body was found is not a known swimming area,” Reinhardt said said.
The investigation was ongoing as of press time June 28.
