A “Republican Reunion” will be held near the Lake Harriet Bandshell on July 8.
According to the event's organizer, Robert Carney Jr., the reunion is especially for “former Republicans, discouraged Republicans and Republican Republicans.”
“In recent years, the Republican party has become ‘un-Republican' in many ways,” Carney said in an e-mail about the event. “It's time for Republican moderates to meet, and see what we can do to change the direction of the party, especially at the state level.”
Carney, a Southwest resident, said there are two goals for the reunion: 1) to organize support for an effort to seek a commitment from Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty to take a “more moderate” direction during his second term or find a more moderate Republican to challenge him in the primary; and 2) Recruit moderate Republicans in Minneapolis and St. Paul to run for the State Legislature.
Carney maintains the website, www.republicancontract.com, that spells out his views on the state of Republican politics in Minnesota.
The event will start at noon at the picnic area near the bandshell.
