The Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO) is creating a new greening committee to improve the neighborhood’s green spaces.
SSCO Boardmember Lisa Fink, a co-chair of the new committee, said the new focus on greening and park issues was sparked by some residents’ interest in improving Stevens Square Park, 1801 Stevens Ave. S.
Fink, who is in her third year of gardening at the neighborhood’s LaSalle Community Garden, 1729 LaSalle Ave. S., is a lifelong gardener. She cited numerous benefits to gardening and maintaining green space in the neighborhood.
It raises property values, builds community and lowers stress, she said.
“It increases the standard of living. It’s also a great opportunity for people to get to know each other,” she added.
The committee will also look at ways of using environmental design as a crime-prevention tool. The committee will tentatively meet the third Thursday of each month. Meeting locations have yet to be determined.
Anyone interested in participating should contact SSCO at 874-2840. Check out www.sscoweb.org for further updates.
