Especially for Children, 4249 Bryant Ave. S., closed Sept. 30. The preschool offered full and half-day care for preschool-aged children.
The preschool had been a neighborhood staple for 29 years. Especially for Children President Priscilla Williams said the school closed due to low enrollment.
She said the preschool had been waning as other programs were developed that met the same need, such as Minneapolis Public Schools' High-Five program for 4-year-olds.
At one time, the school operated in four Southwest locations concurrently. The school had served infants through 10 years old in several various Southwest locations including Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave. S. and Lyndale Farmstead Park, 3900 Bryant Ave. S.
“It is sad,” Williams said. “We hope that something great can happen in that location for the community. We've really enjoyed the people and the families we've served through the years and I think it's a great community.”
Especially for Children is still in negotiations with potential owners who were undisclosed, she added; there's a possibility that new ownership will continue to provide childcare at that site.
Especially for Children continues to operate in nine other locations, including two Edina centers. Three out of four staffers transferred to one of the preschool's Edina locations.
