Turnout at this year's National Night Out block parties rose by 21 percent over 2004, according to organizers, earning the city the “National Night Out 2005 Award” from the event's sponsor.
National Night Out events are designed to bring neighbors together to socialize and start or encourage block clubs that work on crime-prevention efforts. Traditionally, Minneapolis's participation has been high, but this year, the National Association of Town Watch declared the city the national leader.
The Minneapolis Police Department's Community Crime Prevention/SAFE unit coordinated the event.
