The Community Crime Prevention/SAFE (CCP/SAFE) Unit has issued deadline-driven costs to help plan for this year's National Night Out (NNO), set for Tuesday, Aug. 2. NNO is the day on which neighborhoods host a block party to build relations among neighbors, business owners and police to help prevent crime.
Register early, and your block can save money.
Registration can be done online at www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/nno or by calling 673-3568 - but it must be done by July 12 for your block to be eligible for door prizes.
If you want to close off your street, you need a separate permit. Applications are at www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/events-management, or you can call 673-2220.
Street-closing permit fees go up as NNO nears:
- Before June 28, the fee is $25,
- June 29-July 11: $40,
- July 12-July 18: $60,
- July 19-26: $160,
- The last chance to apply is on July 27 for a $200 fee.
In 2004, there were more than 800 block parties in Minneapolis with 38,000 participants. That effort earned Minneapolis a first-place ranking among large U.S. cities according to the National Association of Town Watch. Minneapolis also won this award in 2001 and 2002.
NNO celebrations can be small or large. To start a block club in preparation for the event, call the CCP/ SAFE Unit at 673-3568. For more information about the event or to register, visit www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/nno.
