Former SAFE Officer Walt Johnson dies

Officer Walt Johnson, known to many in Southwest as a Crime-Prevention SAFE officer, died of a heart attack Nov. 4. He was 39, and was buried Nov. 8 in Elk River.

In an e-mail sent to community members, Crime-Prevention Specialist Karen Abrahamson recalled Johnson's 13 years of service in Southwest.

She said Johnson served SAFE from 1996 to 2002 in the 5th and 2nd precincts and had more recently worked as a 911 day-shift responder in Southwest. Abrahamson said Johnson was known as a child safety advocate and would often mention his seven children in community presentations. His wife, Karen, is pregnant with their 8th child.

Fifth Precinct officers have set up a memorial fund for Johnson's family and are accepting cards on their behalf.
