Day of the Dead celebration set for greenway Oct. 30

For those seeking an alternative to a candy-driven Halloween evening, the second annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) will take place Saturday, Oct. 30, 4-6 p.m. on the Midtown Greenway.

Participants will gather at the greenway entrance ramp near 28th Street & Nicollet Avenue and bring offerings such as candles and flowers to ceremonial altars to honor their ancestors. Many will carry lanterns made in workshops sponsored by the Lyndale and other neighborhood groups. They will then walk to the Soluna-Arts Studio, 2831 Aldrich Ave. S., for refreshments and music by Sin Nombre, Danza de Venezuela and Rumba Etrena.

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration originating in Mexico that honors and remembers the dead, a day not only of mourning but also of celebration and joy.

Participants are encouraged to wear black and white clothing, representing the traditional skeleton symbol, for this free, public celebration.
