Armatage Community and Montessori School, 2501 W. 56th St. is looking for community volunteers to donate an hour a week to help kids read. The school’s Reading Partners program has been revived because budget cuts cost the school its full-time No Child Left Behind teacher.
According to Armatage parent Margaret Richardson, "We need the help of our parents and community to continue our excellent record of reducing the achievement gap and giving all of our students the opportunity to believe they can read and achieve success in school and beyond."
Volunteers are paired with 1st- through 5th-grade students for two 30-minute reading sessions. Volunteers meet with the same students each week. Volunteers do not need to be education professionals but do need to be willing to volunteer their time to enrich the life of a child.
