Whittier gets new neighborhood organizer

Phuong Dao has been hired to replace Suzy Kim as the Whittier Alliance’s neighborhood organizer. Her first day was Sept. 7.

Dao graduated with degrees in political science and public administration from the University of Northern Iowa. She also earned a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute in 2003. Before taking the job, she worked as a student advisor at Hamline University.

Born in Saigon, Dao came to America when she was 13, growing up in Iowa. She is one of four siblings.

"I know the Whittier community quite well because I have been active with the friends from the local Vietnamese community in Whittier, " Dao said.

"This neighborhood is very diverse, and that is part of its attraction to me," she said. "It is vibrant and, because I am young, I like it."

Her initial tasks will be organizing block clubs, encouraging voter registration for the November election, and organizing candidate forums for state and Congressional races.
