I-35W sets Sept. 29 for bus-rapid-transit public meeting at King Park

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will host two public meetings, including a Wednesday, Sept. 29 event in Southwest -- to gather input on bus rapid transit. BRT is a bus system with priority lanes that save riders commuting time and is being considered for I-35W from Lakeville into Southwest.

The local meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Park building, on the corner of 41st Street & Nicollet Avenue. The other meeting is in Burnsville.

In 2003, the Legislature directed the transportation department to do a BRT study, set for December release. The state agency has formulated various BRT options for further planning on the I-35W corridor and wants public input on the options.

The BRT meeting is timely, since the Minneapolis City Council denied municipal consent Sept. 3 for a Crosstown Commons reconstruction because they wanted a firmer commitment to build and operate BRT along the entire I-35W corridor.
