Fix-up scammers can be burglars, police say

Southwest Community Crime-Prevention Specialist Jennifer Neale issued a crime alert for neighborhoods south of 46th Street. She warned of burglaries involving "travelers" who use a home-maintenance sales pitch to distract residents and burglarize their homes.

Neale said these "travelers" approach homeowners, offering them great deals on home maintenance work such as roofing, tree trimming and driveway resurfacing. She said while giving the sales pitch, they case the homes so they can burglarize them later.

Neale said these kinds of criminals are known to saturate an area quickly and move on somewhere else. She said it's important for homeowners to decline "walk-up" business solicitations and always call 911 to report suspicious behavior.
