Library Board goes forward with Walker repairs

A defiant Minneapolis Public Library Board voted May 19 to continue the process of repairing the Walker Library roof despite the City Council's earlier rejection of funding to fix the facility.

The Library Board approved a contract with Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik and Associates for architectural and engineering services to detail the extent of damage to the parking deck/roof of the 2880 Hennepin Ave. S. library.

The contract is for $102,000 plus expenses.

Library Director Kit Hadley said that the Board's action doesn't commit the Board to paying the estimated $750,000 in repairs the Walker needs, or even the $102,000 engineering contract.

"It's a very long process to execute a contract," Hadley said. "This is just one of the steps, and we decided to go ahead with it in case a decision is made to go ahead to repair the Walker parking deck."

She said the May 19 vote allows library staff to do the work necessary before the contract is signed.

The City Council voted 9-3 May 14 against authorizing the sale of $440,000 in library referendum bonds that the Library Board needed to fund the Walker repairs.

At the May 19 meeting, Hadley told the Board that the library system does not have the funds to make the repairs without the bond money.
