Event, auction to help fight ovarian cancer

A Linden Hills resident, Maria McCarthy, has organized a silent auction to fund the nonprofit Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. The "Celebration of Life" event will be held Friday, Jan. 30, 6:30 pm to midnight at Architectural Antiques, 1330 NE Quincy St.

McCarthy started the event in honor of her sister, Teresa Ely, who died of ovarian cancer in November. Ely was the second sister McCarthy lost to cancer, having lost Leigh Pollpeter to breast cancer four years ago. When Ely was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, McCarthy dedicated herself to the cause, noting the work of breast cancer activists. "We need to bring this same level of awareness to ovarian cancer," she said.

The auction, which will feature over 200 items for bid, is the event's centerpiece. It will feature live music, drinks, and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

For more information, contact McCarthy at 920-7148 or e-mail her at [email protected]
