Hand-carved wooden bowls

Chris Effrem has been carving wood in Southwest for 65 years. He carves many things, but he said his handcrafted bowls make good gifts. Effrem carves the bowls out of different types of wood; he said the size and the shape of the bowl directly determine the price.

Effrem, who started the Wood Carvers Store and School, now in the Cedar-Isles-Dean neighborhood on 3056 Excelsior Blvd., said because he enjoys his work, he rarely keeps track of how long it takes him to make anything. Effrem said that along with any wood purchase, he recommends buying a bottle of the C.E. Wood Polish ($8.95), made with his own secret ingredients.
