In a book called "From the Barber’s Chair: 50th and France Avenue: 1936-1988," Vern Swanson detailed the neighborhood’s development. Swanson’s barbershop was on the southeast corner of the intersection, and he wrote that the parking concerns on 50th Street have been a Fulton issue since 1934.
"The Edina Theatre was built in 1934," he wrote. "They wanted to build this here theatre on 50th and Xerxes, but the neighbors there got up a petition to keep ’em out because of the parking. They didn’t have the parking space, and the residents didn’t want the parking around their homes."
