SW students vie for Presidential honor

Two Southwest High School seniors are candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Colin Hall and Sarah Hillenbrand are nominees for one of the nation's highest honors, given yearly to 141 U.S. high school seniors.

Hall and Hillenbrand were selected because they were in the top 30 standardized-test scorers in Minnesota. They've submitted applications that include essays, self-assessments and grade transcripts to win a slot.

The applications are sent to the National Commission of Presidential Scholars, which selects a male and female from each state.

Presidential Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in the summer, during which they meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people. To commemorate their achievement, the Scholars are awarded the Presidential Scholars medallion at a White House ceremony.
