Police business security workshop

Business burglaries have increased this summer in the 5th Precinct, the Minneapolis Police Department said.

In June through August, the 5th Precinct, which covers Southwest Minneapolis, had between 15 and 19 burglaries a month, a police crime alert said. In September, businesses in the 5th Precinct had 43 robberies.

"Basically, it is increased on Lake Street and up the Lyndale and Nicollet avenue corridors north of Lake Street," said Sgt. Barry Nelson. "They are prying in the doors and smashing windows and grabbing."

Robin North, Minneapolis Police Crime Prevention Specialist, said most of the crimes happened in the late evening and early morning hours and encouraged businesses to lock up at night.

To further protect Southwest businesses from theft, North and SAFE Officer Jabra Kawas are conducting a security workshop for local business owners

The workshop will be held on Saturday Nov. 2 at the fifth precinct 3101 Nicollet Ave. S., with a continental breakfast and registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the workshop starting at 8 a.m., going until Noon.

The workshop will include financial crime education and fraud, business security and loss prevention, in addition to 911 and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) briefing. Contact the SAFE unit for more information at (612) 673-2819 or (612) 673-2867.
