Meetings on library cuts

The Minneapolis Public Library may have to permanently close a community library or reduce staff, library hours, or its book acquisitions to meet its 2003 budget target, it said in a news release.

The city has set the library's 2003 budget at the same level as its 2002 budget, library staff said. It is part of city efforts to limit overall levy increases at 8 percent. Because of inflationary increases in costs, the library system has to trim $1.5 million in services for the upcoming year,

The City Council's Ways and Means Committee will meet Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m., 317 City Hall, to take public comment on the proposed budget. The Library Board will hold a series of community meetings to discuss its budget options, including one at Washburn Community Library, 5244 Lyndale Ave. S., Saturday, Oct. 12, 1-3 p.m.
