Twenty-seven seniors who attend Southwest Minneapolis high schools are semifinalists in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Competition. The students attended Southwest High School, Minnehaha Academy, The Blake School and Breck School.
National Merit Semifinalists are picked from the top 1 percent Pre-Stanford Achievement Test (PSAT) scores of each state's college-bound high school seniors.
In order to compete for a bounty of 8,000 national scholarships, students must complete an extensive application process.
Southwest High School had nine semifinalists: Shelby Gonzalez, Colin Hall, Brian Hawthorne, Laura Helde, Peter Hepburn, Elizabeth Lubozynski, Paul Lund, Alec Palmerton and Sam Rosenbaum. The Blake School had ten semifinalists: Daniel Bretl, Mitchell Brooks, Kelsey Johnson, Sean McCabe, Michael Melville, Anna Morrison, Peter Scherf, Michael Stern, Amelia Wood and Yifan Xu. Seven Breck seniors were semifinalists: Kathleen Crowe, Brenden Doms, Claire Henry, Ari Isaacman-Beck, Sam Perry, Mark Thomson and Paul Von Kuster. Minnehaha Academy's semifinalist is Amelia Karraker.
