Walk around the clock

The 10th Annual Lyndale Crime Prevention Walk-A-Thon -- a 24-hour, 7-day round-the-clock walk -- will take place May 9 through May 16.

The goal of the Walk-A-Thon is to thwart would-be criminals through a constant community presence.

"The presence of observant,law-abiding citizens enjoying the public sidewalks and streets of a neighborhood is a proven deterrent to crime," said Luther Krueger, a Lyndale resident and SAFE officer who heads the event.

A tight-knit community, Krueger said, can respond to issues more effectively than "a neighborhood where everyone hides in their homes watching television, ignores their neighbors in need and is apathetic to the forces that bring down the quality of life in the community."

When the Walk-A-Thon was initiated in 1993, he said, drug activity in Lyndale was thick -- "You'd think there was a carnival in town."

During that original community walk, Krueger said, crime faded after just a few days.

Volunteers are needed to sign up for the two-hour walking shifts.

The kick-off event, featuring hot dogs and hamburgers, will take place May 9, 7 p.m. at 3200 Pleasant Ave. S.
