Editor’s note: We’ll be tracking Service Works — the Southwest volunteer team profiled in the Jan. 25–Feb. 7 Journal — throughout the year to update you on upcoming projects and reflect on recent volunteer efforts. Service Works, led by Welcome Jerde, Meredith Young and Kathy Coskran, will be organizing service projects each month this year benefiting a range of nonprofits and community groups.
Thanks to all the Journal readers who stepped forward to get involved after reading the recent article.
February project: Service Works is organizing a card-making party for Little Brothers–Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) on Feb. 27 in Linden Hills. Each month, the organization’s volunteers visit their clients and drop off small gifts to ease the isolation and loneliness many seniors experience.
When: Feb. 27, 12:15–2 p.m.
Where: Linden Hills Park Building, 43rd & Xerxes
Needs: Packaged teas, cookies, small potted plants, $10–$20 gift cards to Cub and cash donations
Event contact: Meredith Young, 940-6417
Recap of January event: Once again, people stuffed Welcome Jerde’s home in Southwest with tons of boxes and bags filled with items for YouthLink, an organization that serves homeless youth on the edge of Downtown. Jerde reports that they had two “packed-to-the-ceiling” vanloads of clothes, baby supplies and kitchen items, among other things, to deliver to YouthLink after people dropped off donations Jan. 23.
“YouthLink folks were incredulous that some small group of families and individuals could do what you’ve done,” Jerde wrote to volunteers. “Many teens benefit from your generosity. For kids who don’t often see the best view of the world, you have shown them that we do care about them.”
