MCAD lot approved

WHITTIER — A Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) proposal to build a surface parking lot near the intersection of Stevens Avenue and West 26th Street won approval from the Board of Directors.

MCAD proposed the lot to replace 140 parking spaces it will lose when its lease of space in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts parking lot ends in January 2010.

In previous discussions on the project, some board members expressed concerns that the 100-space lot would not meet MCAD’s parking needs and might exacerbate street-parking issues in the surrounding neighborhood. There also was concern a residence in the neighborhood would be demolished to make way for the lot.

MCAD officials said they would move the house instead of demolish it. They also added green space and a sculpture garden to the lot’s design.

Volunteer for Linden Hills Festival

LINDEN HILLS — The organizers of the annual Linden Hills Festival are looking for “disposal monitors” who will staff trash stations at the May 16 festival and help people figure out what can be recycled or composted. The event is intended to be zero waste so nearly all materials should be diverted from the trash.

Last year’s event, which attracted 3,000 attendees, generated only two small bags of trash, according to organizers.

The volunteer shifts are two hours long. The event runs 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Those interested should contact Laurie Foster at [email protected] or 929-3214.
