What better place for an aspiring arts and entertainment reporter to be than in Southwest Minneapolis? My name is Andrew Newman, and I am one of the interns joining the Southwest Journal and the Downtown Journal this fall.
I am a born-and-bred Minnesotan; I lived in Minneapolis for my first few months of life before moving to Richfield and finally settling in Rosemount. I returned to Minneapolis to study at the University of Minnesota, and I couldn’t be happier. I am a double major in journalism and studies in cinema and media culture (a.k.a. the new and improved film studies program) and just began my final year of classes a few weeks ago. But please, don’t ask me what I plan on doing after graduation. I’m still in denial that there is a life beyond school.
As I said earlier, my writing focus is on the arts. If I’m not paging through a book, I’m often watching a movie or seeing a show (or wishing I had enough money to see a show). But I hope this doesn’t put me into a corner. I’m equally passionate about community and have always believed that you can never really find a home without being part of a community. I will consider myself extremely lucky if I can get even an inkling of what makes this great city thrive as it has done for years. Minneapolis is a wonderful place, and this goes beyond the arts scene.
So if you see me hanging around, don’t hesitate to say hello. I’m a nice guy (honest!), and don’t worry — my deer-in-the-headlights look of shock at being recognized will soon pass.

Hi, my name is Emily Stickler, and I am one of the new interns this fall for the Downtown and Southwest Journals. I am embarking on the last leg of my undergraduate degree experience at the University of Minnesota as a journalism and mass communication major with a Spanish studies minor. With my college career coming to a close this May, I am very eager to get involved in possible career paths within the field of print journalism, and what better way to do that than to gain experience at a community-based publication right here in the Twin Cities?
I spent this past summer working at a travel magazine in Sydney, Australia, where I was able to write and edit for a local audience while exploring many areas around the country. The internship gave me experience working in a magazine newsroom, and I am confident that working in this newspaper newsroom will present new challenges and opportunities!
When not running around campus between classes, figure skating with the U’s synchronized skating team, or teaching CPR and First Aid at my part-time job, I am most likely enjoying music or the outdoors with my friends and family. I love to camp, run, figure skate, fish, go to concerts and bike in areas around the cities. I also recently ran the Twin Cities 10-mile race at the Twin Cities Marathon.
Over the next few months, I will be getting to know this area of Minneapolis through interviews, events and of course, lots of research. I am excited to contribute to delivering accurate and interesting news to this community, and I am very eager to jump right in and learn all about how all this works!
