Kickstarter campaign underway to fund handmade candles inspired by video games, movies and comics.

Whittier neighborhood newlyweds have entered the last week of a $5,000 Kickstarter campaign to make "Nerdy Candles: For Nerds."

"We're making four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle candles that smell like pizza herbs," said potter Roxie Lubanovic. "Even nerdier, we're hand-making ceramic pieces, like a Carbonite candle with a little Han Solo stuck inside. ... It's like finding a prize in a box of cereal."

Other candles smelling of garden dirt melt away to reveal either a preserved dino or scattered dinosaur bones.

The Kickstarter project is about more than nerdy candles, however. Roxie and her husband Tom are currently melting soy wax using their home stove range. (Soy wax burns cleaner than traditional paraffin wax, and it's biodegradable.) They're hoping to buy better equipment and expand into a Northeast art studio this fall.

Kickstarter has worked for them before — a year-and-a-half ago, Roxie bought her kiln through a Kickstarter campaign. She and Tom have specialized in "book lover's candles," including a butterbeer-scented candle inspired by Harry Potter.

"Our business, Frostbeard Studio, is all about mixing traditional craftsmanship with influences from geek culture," Roxie said.

Roxie and Tom will be at the Powderhorn Art Fair this weekend in the Community Showcase.

The Kickstarter campaign ends Wednesday, Aug. 7.
